In the virtual world of Second Life, anything goes — even if your goal is to build a corporate brand, hold ad hoc user group meetings, sponsor a conference or help end users find a video card driver.

8. Best Buy Geek Squad
For Second Lifers with a technical bent, Geek Squad Island is a great place to get free technical support.
Allright, all the Geeks unite! At Geek Squad Island, the most impressive offering — apart from the bumper car ride that’s modeled after the original Geek Squad vehicles — is deep technical advice.

Real-world employees keep regular hours from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. and will chat about any topic. I asked about video card support for DX10 games and which USB keydrives work for ReadyBoost, and an agent knew the answers immediately.

According to Diana Garrett, a Geek Squad spokeswoman (and my tour guide), employees will consult for free until a customer needs to buy a product — for that, they have to call or e-mail.

There are no giveaways, though, and the place is dead during non-working hours.

H&R Block
Now slightly dormant just after April 17, the H&R Block presence on Second Life is still an accountant’s paradise.

The wood floors at H&R Block Island (search for “HR Block” on Second Life) are a subtle reminder: This is a top-tier financial consulting portal, modeled after the 12,000 office locations worldwide.

Despite the stuffy decor, there is an interesting point-of-sale angle. For $100 Linden (the currency in Second Life, which is about $70 in U.S. currency), you can buy the new Tango online tax preparation software. No discount, though — that was the same price offered on the H&R Block site until a “limited-time offer” was instituted.

The bundle includes access to virtual scooters, dance shoes, a T-shirt and other paraphernalia. Of course, the real transaction takes place on the Web, where you type in an access code.

Unlike Dell Island, where you can build a virtual PC and then buy it online, H&R Block seems to want to conduct real business in Second Life, perhaps as a proof-of-concept. Now that’s an innovative spirit!

Allright. After more then 1000 hits to 1 page alone i decided that i will make a NEW list, with 10 more places to visit in Second Life. If this page also gets more then 1000 hits. My Second Life Friends,

Some time no posts from me. But that has a reason. I made a HUGE page special for all the newbies out there. I’ve made a Starting Guide for Second Life , and that took a bit longer that i expected.

So read this starting guide, for all your newly baked SL users out there! Have fun with it, and i hope you like what i’ve made.

In order to create animations for Second Life, there are several programs that can now be used. Originally, only Poser could be used, and it is still a great option (versions 4 and up work with SL).

For best results, you should download the SL avatar figures for Poser, linked below. Poser is a commercial product, so it does require purchase to use. Poser is available for Windows and Mac.

There is also a popular open source animation client called Avimator available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has been created specifically for SL. For more information about it, please see the Avimator site linked below. A variation of Avimator, called Qavimator, is also available and being actively developed.

Additionally, some other programs that can export BVH files can be used with SL.

Well, there are several important points to keep in mind when choosing your name in Second Life offcourse.

The first is that this choice is permanent (unless you create a new account), so choose carefully. Another important point is that unlike services like instant message clients, email, etc…, the addition of a last name allows you to not have to worry that the first name you want will be taken.

For example, if you want your name to be Kung Foo, someone already creating Kung Chung would not block your choice of the first name Kung - only the combination with the last name Foo being taken would not allow you to create the name. This also means you do not need to add numbers to your name to differentiate. In fact, this is discouraged, as the vast majority of players do not have numbers in their first name. You should also be aware of proper use of case, as your name is case sensitive and cannot be changed once created. You should capitalize the first letter of your first name unless you absolutely want your name to start with a lower case letter.

The choice of last name is a matter of personal preference. You cannot define the last name yourself, but you can choose from a long and regularly changing list of last names. Last names are added and removed on a regular basis to add variety. It is why you may find that you know someone in SL with a last name that is not available for you to choose from the list when you create your account. This is not uncommon, as many names have been retired already or some are restricted for other reasons. There are no gameplay consequences from last name choice.

When you see someone in club dancing, they are generally doing one of three things:

1) They have purchased dance animations from a store and are using their own animations, either individually or in some kind of dance device/HUD to choose them.

2) The club or someone in the club has a dance device that users can click on to join the dance. You don’t have to own any dances to use a dance machine - it will ask for permission to animate you when you click on it, and then you will do whatever dances are in the machine.

3) You will often see blue/pink ballsets in clubs for couple’s dancing - these are special dances synchronized for couples - each user gets on one of the two balls, and then they will dance together.
